Here on Koh Samed

Koh Samed

About a month ago, a lucky combination of public holidays and other days of school gave us a surprise week long holiday. Making the most of the time off work, we decided to hop down to Koh Samed with our friends for a bit of beach action.

Koh Samed is the closest island to Bangkok and is popular amongst Thais and ex-pats alike looking for a short break from the city. It's only a 15 minute boat ride from the mainland and once there you can walk to the nearest beach or catch a lift further south. Further down the island it looks more untouched but for the ease of our short trip we didn't venture very far afield.

Because it was a public holiday and we were worried about places being full, we had booked a guesthouse at the ferry terminal. I'm usually apprehensive about paying for a room before seeing it but we lucked out with a funny little place down an alley. It was full of holidaying Thais and included breakfast which is always nice :)

We enjoyed a couple of very lazy beach days, reading our books to the sound of lapping waves (and the occasional jet ski!) in between dips in the warm sea.

Koh Samed may not be the most beautiful or idyllic of the many Thai islands but when you're on a beach in Thailand life is pretty good anyway! Hop on an early bus from Bangkok and be enjoying an ice cream on the beach by lunch time :)
